Oysters and other pearl makers

Many bivalves are able to produce pearls, as in the case of mussels right through to giant tropical-sea clam shells. However, it is rare to find shellfish capable of making truly beautiful pearls. This is the case of oysters called "pearl" or also "nacre" (or mother-of-pearl) oysters.

There are many varieties of pearl oysters.

The PINCTADA FUCATA, also known as the Akoya, is without doubt the most famous for its renowned white pearls of Japan. It can be found in the cool or temperate waters of Asia
